Making a list (and checking it twice) in Texas

My debut novel, Gentlemen, has just made the 2010 Tayshas High School Reading List. That’s the Young Adult list for the great state of Texas, and I am thrilled to be on it.

This should open some doors for my book.

I’ve said this before, but one of the main reasons I write YA is to reach reluctant readers and boys who have been kind of left behind by Gossip Girl, Twilight, et cetera, et cetera, ad nauseum. Being on this list can really help get my book into the hands of those readers, and so it’s an opportunity as much as an honor.

And heck, it’s Texas. Not to stereotype the whole state, because it’s a big one, and there are guys in Austin who know more about Brooklyn indie bands than I ever will and women in Houston who know more about the arts. Still, I could clean a fish, shoot a rifle, and ride a horse by the time I was 10. Some of my favorite singers wear cowboy hats, and some of my favorite athletes race stock cars. I just suspect that’s not quite as rare in TX as it is in NYC.
