Pawling Is 4 Ballaz

I am reading at the Book Cove, a fantastic bookstore in Pawling, NY, on November 14 at 1 o’clock. Also on the bill: The sublime Sarah MacLean (The Season) and the sibling-riffic Daniel and Dina Nayeri (Another Faust). According to Google Maps, the Book Cove is located “489 feet” from the Metro-North train station.
I know that train station well (this is one of those Proustian madeleine moments, by the way; try to picture the far-off look in my eyes and the wistful, distracted tone in my voice). I have trundled past it hundreds of times on the Harlem Valley Line train, heading to and from my hometown.
We actually played Pawling in football when I was at Housatonic Valley Regional High School. The results are lost in the mists of time but, well, we probably lost. We were traveling by yellow dog schoolbus and a trip that far into New York was like a West Coast swing. Darn those Tigers! I might have kicked an extra point or two but no field goals. I would’ve remembered that.
In any case, I will be creating some new memories there (was the payoff worth the setup? discuss) on November 14. Hopefully I won’t get blocked or tackled this time, but I might do the “Russian” accent, in which case all bets are off.

Join us, won’t you? Pawling is a great little town with many a shoppe to poppe into and a nice place to spend a fall afternoon kicking through technicolor leaves. You disreputable New Yorkers can just hoppe (too much?) on the train at Grand Central and arrive as if by magic carpet.
You nice reading is about to be ruined… I told EVERY former person on the Pawling football team that you played again to show up in full football team outfits & chant “PAWLING! PAWLING PAWLING!” through out your entire reading.
I was HOPING you would do that because I am busing in the former members of the Housatonic Valley Regional High School Mountaineers, and we are going to REPLAY THE GAME like in that Robin Williams-Kurt Russell movie. We’ll get them this time! We Mountaineers are notorious late bloomers.
